LIBRA  – The Scales of Justice

Sep 23 – Oct 22

Libra is represented in this painting as the scales of justice.  Venus is shown in phase in the open circle of it's planetary symbol.  Cosmos are shown as the flower of Libra.  The colors of Libra are deep lavenders, purples and orange, with metallic highlights.  The background color shows through the dishes of the scale to indicate that Libra is an air sign.  The glyph for Libra is shown as a shadow over the rest of the painting.  The four corners of the border show the glyph, the duality - masculine, the triplicity - Cardinal, and the quadruplicity or element - Air.  The additional symbols repeated along the sides are the House, the 2 numbers, and the time of year.

The Greeks saw the stars of Libra as the Golden Chariot of Pluto, god of the Underworld.  Four jet-black horses pulled his golden chariot when he periodically visited the Upperworld.  In Roman mythology Libra depicts the Scales of Justice held by Astraea (Virgo), the goddess of justice.   They chose a scale because some 4000 years ago the sun passed through this constellation at the autumnal equinox.
